Davis studies regeneration and biofabrication. Although they seem like “niche medicinal studies,” Davis believes they are actually “diverse areas” with one common goal: fixing and replacing damaged organs in the human body. Regeneration is traditionally defined as stimulating existing tissues causing them to replace damaged or missing tissues. Biofabrication is the process of taking a small culture of cells and transforming them into an entirely new set of tissues or organs. Though biofabrication technology is in developmental stages, Davis believes that, to try to solve issues regarding biofabrication, several different routes can be taken. Research in this space is happening at Texas A&M in Dr. Gaharwar’s research lab where they study 3-D printing replacement organs and at MIT in Dr. Knouse’s research lab where they study regenerative properties of the liver.
