Ava Takenaka

Having a global perspective inspired Ava to research medical devices for use in developing countries. She is interested in creating low-cost, efficient, and easy to use devices that can be used in nontraditional medical settings. Research currently being conducted by Dr. Teresa Fernandez Abedul at the University of Oviedo is an example of what she would like to do. Her team in Spain is working to develop an immuno-electro-chemical device to diagnose stroke in ambulatory settings. They are working to solve the problem of early differential diagnosis in stroke patients. She is passionate about the work in Spain because of the location where it will be used, the goal of having a differentiating biomarker for diagnosis, and of its size and low cost. She wants to apply device attributes like this to her research and future work.

Ava believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to receive life changing medical support. Families deserve to have access to technology that could help save their loved ones. She wants to use her research in biomedical engineering to do this and change the world one patient as a time.
