Fatyma Lawal is a sophomore Pre-Medicine Chemistry major with a concentration in biochemistry. Hailing from Houston, Texas, she is passionate about her Muslim faith, science, and music of all kinds. Fatyma loves to communicate new knowledge and make use of opportunities that comes from research.
“My science is how the atoms in your body interact with certain chemicals to exert a change in the body and its functions,” says Fatyma. “In the smallest cases, how atoms bond and in bigger molecules what unique alterations could possibly change the entire function of a reaction.” Fascinated by chemistry–specifically the chemical interactions between innate and added elements in the body–Fatyma sees herself pursuing either cancer research or research into hygiene and beauty products. “I have passion for both topics because they have a common denominator of chemistry,” she explains. “I want to explore, analyze, and draw conclusions for whatever chemical reactions could better the life of every person, medically or in self-care.”
